ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Even Gran is a senior adviser in The Norwegian Humanist Association, and a journalist in the association’s online news outlet Fritanke.no. Since 2005 he has written full time about lifestance, religion and lifestance politics in Norway and abroad.

The fall of 2014 og spring of 2015, he lived one year in Berkeley, California. While there, he decided to take a closer look at the US Humanist Movement.

This book is the result.

Jessica Ahlquist

It is doubtful whether anyone in the US has experienced the wrath of Christian traditionalists to the same extent since the McCollum family in the 1940s.

But Jessica has also been described as a "rockstar of the Secular movement".

Damon Fowler

Damon, perhaps even more than Jessica, has had to bear grave social consequences for standing up for the secular principles.

Neil Ridgeley og Denise Graybill

The new Commissioners quickly started the practice that is the reason I have made the trip to Sykesville this day; They insisted on starting every board meeting with a prayer.

Neil and Denise sued them.

«Congress Shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion», is the first sentence in the First Amendment to the US constitution.

At the same time, the US is one of the most
religious countries of the Western world.

The Religious Right argue that the US is
founded on Christianity and are campaigning to deconstruct the Separation of State and Church.

This book is about those who oppose this - the Secular Americans. Which battles are won, which battles are lost?

In this book, you can also read long interviews with people who have sacrificed a lot to uphold the secular principles on which America is founded.

Educate yourself on the controversies around:
• The Pledge of Allegiance
• «In God We Trust» – The National Motto
• The National Day of Prayer
• State prohibitions against hiring atheists
